#DiscussAI Think‑Ins

Discussions on AI, ethics & technology in your life & society
thinkins

#DiscussAI Think‑Ins are structured public dialogues that bring citizens and researchers together to discuss the societal implications of emerging technologies and data‑driven innovation, with a focus on artificial intelligence in the Republic of Ireland. Coordinated by the ADAPT Centre with SFI support, the Think‑Ins use accessible prompts, small‑group facilitation and rapid sense‑making to turn complex topics into concrete questions that matter to people’s lives. Across multiple editions, the format has been deployed both in person and online, engaging diverse participants and local partners.

According to the evaluation, the Think‑Ins model proves effective at building trust and mutual understanding while generating actionable insights for research and outreach. Participants report feeling heard and better equipped to navigate science‑ and technology‑related choices, while researchers gain a clearer picture of public concerns, information needs and real‑world use contexts. The iterative design allows each Think‑In wave to refine materials, recruitment and facilitation based on evidence of what works.

Our role

Stickydot was the evaluation partner, designing and implementing a co-evaluation process. We co-creating the expected outcomes through participatory methodologies and synthesising feedback from participants and organisers using innovative tools to identify strengths, gaps and improvement opportunities. We analysed how the #DiscussAI shape inclusion, deliberation quality and outcome relevance.

We also helped translate lessons into practical recommendations for future editions, including guidance on outreach to under‑represented groups, accessible materials, and post‑event follow‑ups that connect insights to research planning and communication practice.

Outcomes

The #DiscussAI Think‑Ins programme delivered a validated, scalable format for evidence‑informed public dialogue in Ireland’s research system. Core outputs include tested facilitation guides, recruitment approaches, topic framings and evaluation instruments that institutions can reuse and adapt. The model strengthens researcher skills in listening, framing and engagement while enhancing citizens’ confidence and agency.

Longer‑term, the programme supports a more responsive science communication ecosystem by creating repeatable feedback loops between the public, researchers and institutions. By documenting outcomes and sharing resources openly, Think‑Ins contribute to national capacity for meaningful participation in research and innovation. They fed directly into the Age-Friendly AI programme, co-ordinated by ADAPT and where Stickydot again leads the co-evaluation process.
