Everyday, we see science and innovation rising-up to face today’s pressing challenges. Europe is on a mission to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030. Reaching this ambitious policy objective will only be possible through the active participation of multiple stakeholders from industry, policy, science and civil society sectors, through co-creation.
MOSAIC aims to find the best ways to make the active participation of multiple stakeholders possible when addressing mission-like objectives. The project will highlight how co-creation can make goals like 100 climate-neutral cities possible through a more inclusive process that better addresses societal needs.
At the core of the MOSAIC project is the concept of Open Innovation, where the contributions of citizens, scientists, entrepreneurs and policymakers are fairly valued as they collaborate to build sustainable futures.Over three years, MOSAIC will develop an Open Innovation methodology through an extensive review of past and ongoing co-creation experiences – particularly those generated through the European Commission’s Science with and for Society funding programme. MOSAIC will test its approach in pilot actions in two European cities involved in the Cities Mission. The methodology will then be enhanced through replication activities in cities across Europe.

“It is inspiring to contribute to a scientific research environment that remains anchored in the realities and interests of a variety of individuals. Collaborating with the public takes your scientific knowledge off the beaten track and challenges you to take a creative approach to your scientific practice. Go ahead: once you try participatory research, you won’t look back!”
At Stickydot, Florence provides support on citizen science and public engagement projects. Florence has been applying participatory approaches in the fields of environment and public health for over five years. She cares deeply about making every step of a scientific research project inclusive, creative and sustainable.
