Horizon 2020 (Science with and for Society – Improving knowledge on science communication)
01/01/2021 – 31/12/2023
(36 months)
There are no recognised standards in science journalism and communication, nor principles or indicators of quality. And yet they are needed, particularly in a moment when science communication is more than ever a key factor in facilitating democratic deliberation and in fighting misinformation.
ENJOI explored how to make science communication more trustworthy, inclusive and useful to society by bringing together journalists, researchers, communication professionals and citizens. Through research, co-creation and field testing, the project developed and validated practical quality criteria, resources and practical tools that support responsible science communication, science journalism and evidence-informed public dialogue.
Working across multiple countries and media contexts, ENJOI produced a shared vocabulary and a set of actionable tools for science communicators, journalists and outreach practitioners. The intention was to move beyond abstract principles by piloting new practices in real settings and capturing what works, for whom and under what conditions.
Stickydot developed the ENJOI co-creation methodology and led the Brussels hub. We convened workshops with journalists, scientists and civil society actors to surface needs and constraints, translate the project’s insights into usable formats, and test how quality indicators can be embedded in day‑to‑day practice.
We also supported the synthesis and dissemination of results, producing accessible materials and events aimed at practitioners and policy audiences. This ensured that learnings from local pilots informed the wider conversation on trustworthy science communication across Europe.
ENJOI delivered a set of quality indicators, guidelines and practical tools to strengthen responsible science communication and journalism. These outputs were designed for direct uptake by newsrooms, research organisations and intermediaries, and include resources to assess practices, plan improvements and build capacity. They feed directly into the COALESCE European Competence Centre for Science Communication.
The project’s co-creation methodology and pilot results provide an evidence base for future initiatives seeking to improve trust, transparency and inclusiveness in science communication. By documenting processes and showcasing applied examples, ENJOI offers a pathway for organisations to implement changes that are feasible and sustainable in real-world contexts.

“It is inspiring to contribute to a scientific research environment that remains anchored in the realities and interests of a variety of individuals. Collaborating with the public takes your scientific knowledge off the beaten track and challenges you to take a creative approach to your scientific practice. Go ahead: once you try participatory research, you won’t look back!”
At Stickydot, Florence provides support on citizen science and public engagement projects. Florence has been applying participatory approaches in the fields of environment and public health for over five years.
